I finished watching Dexter – Original Sin, a prequel to the original Dexter series.
Whilst in the original Dexter series, we meet a serial killer and vigilante Dexter Morgan and follow his killer spree and we learn about the reasons he became a killer, this series follows young Dexter and the beginning of his killer spree.
In this prequel, we also learn a lot of background from the original series including the story of Dexter’s mother, what really happened, and how she was eventually killed. We learn why Dexter and Brian got separated and how abuse from childhood turned Brian into a serial killer too. Also, Deborah and her life, and how she ultimately ended up as a police officer. All characters from the police station are there, and the producers found a younger cast that looks as if they could be younger versions of the original cast. I was struggling with Angel Batista because there is only one David Zayas and whilst James Martinez portrayed a young version of Angel very well, it was just not the same for me. I absolutely loved both Masuka’s, senior and now a younger version (C.S.Lee and Alex Shimizu). Deborah’s character is equally annoying in both series so Molly Brown did a good job taking over from Jennifer Carpenter as a younger version of Deb.
Michael C. Hall voices Dexter – Original Sin, which helps with getting into the character of a younger Dexter portrayed by Patrick Gibson. Gibson is generally the best member of the cast in this prequel and portrays young Dexter really well. I am not sure to what extent the voiceover from Michael C. Hall helped in feeling as if Gibson is truly a younger version of Hall, but I totally got into Gibson as a young Dexter. He was absolutely outstanding in Dexter – Original Sin. Obviously, there is only one Michael C. Hall and he IS Dexter, but Gibson was absolutely fab as his younger version, he even mimicked the same eating style as Hall does in the original series.
I was originally skeptical about this series because I did not think I would enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the original Dexter, as well as Dexter: The New Blood (again Michael C. Hall is outstanding as the original Dexter).
But Gibson kept me hooked to the point I violated my original rule of not watching series weekly, one episode at a time, but waiting for broadcasting to finish so I could binge them. I kept returning to Dexter: The Original Sin every week and look forward to the possible continuation of this series. I also look forward to the continuation of Dexter with Michael C. Hall, which is vaguely announced. There is room for all sorts of Dexter series, with both Gibson and Hall as stars.
I loved Dexter – Original Sin and can’t wait to see more.
Thank you for reading!
