Director: Lee Isaac Chung
Twisters is an American disaster film portraying a team of researchers, and tornado chasers, trying to chase tornadoes. The 2024 Twisters is a stand-alone sequel to the 1996 Twisters film.
In 2024 Twisters, the research team is trying to find a way to dissipate tornadoes and make them smaller before they cause severe damage and lost lives whilst tornado chasers are after good photos and videos. This relationship obviously causes tension as researchers don’t like YouTubers going after tornadoes for fame. However, things are not always what they seem, and the team later discovers there is also activism and community help behind money-making on social media.
What is interesting about 2024 Twisters is that it starts with a group of teenagers trying to check a science project for their friend, Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar Jones), and sadly, three die during a tornado hit and a mistake they make, which changes the lives of the two survivors forever. The science project lead becomes a meteorologist and continues her career in studying tornadoes, but she does not chase them anymore. That changes when another survivor contacts her and asks for help because he is doing research into tornados for a client…
If you like watching tornados, then you will enjoy watching this on a big screen because there is plenty of that plus generally, the film portrays the making of tornadoes and there are a lot of beautiful scenes with skies, thunder and tornadoes rolling. But, if you think the film will be about science and meteorology, as I hoped, then no. This a love story, which is fine if this is what you want but it wasn’t what I expected so I was surprised (somewhat negatively). I was hoping to see more exploration of the science behind tornadoes and more exploration of anti-intellectualism because we live in a world where everyone thinks they are the expert just because they have a smartphone, and they can google something. Maybe that is something to consider for the next film…
But I mainly watched this to see tornadoes and storms and the film has plenty of that so I enjoyed it and would recommend it to other like-minded viewers who love watching storms.
